Common Ailments - Head

Back to Common Ailments

Headaches:

Background:

Headaches can be a very debilitating problem with an ability to keep you on the sideline for a long time.  There are many different types of headaches and each one has its own unique presentation and treatment.  An important note with any headache is that once we begin to experience a headache the body responds by tightening up the muscles and become hypertonic or tight.  These muscular responses to the original headache (whatever the cause) can lead to an increase in frequency and intensity of the headaches.

Signs and Symptoms:

The most common headache is the tension headache that comes on at the end of the day and is located primarily at the base of the skull but can refer pain into the temples and the forehead.  Migraine headaches are the more intense headaches that can incapacitate you for a few days with throbbing pain usually located on one side of the head, the temple area, and are often associated with visual changes, vomiting and sensitivity to light.  Cluster headaches are becoming more common and they are classically described as an intense pain located in the orbit, the eye, and they come in packs where you will suffer from the headache for a few days or a few weeks in a row and then they will go away for months to years.

Treatment:

Chiropractic treatments have been found to be very effective for the treatment of headaches and can be a safe, non-invasive treatment without the use of Drugs or Surgery.   If you or someone you know is needlessly suffering from pain associated with a Headache come into Absolute Healthcare Chiropractic where Dr. Gerwig will design a customized treatment protocol to heave you on the road to living pain free today!

Sinus Problems:

Background:

Sinus congestion can be a major source of head pain, pressure and tension through the face and into the neck.  When the sinuses produce an excessive amount of mucous it will increase the pressure that is exerted on the inside of the bones of the sinuses.  This pressure can create headaches, nasal pressure and a feeling of fullness in the front of the forehead and the cheeks.  The sinuses normally produce and drain this mucous at an equal level, but If either this mucous is not draining properly or if the production exceeds the drainage that is when we have increased sinus pressure.

Signs and Symptoms:

Someone suffering from sinus pain can report a variety of symptoms with the most common being pressure and a feeling of fullness in the cheeks and forehead area.  There will often be an associated post nasal drip and a stuffed or runny nose.  Headaches and watery eyes are also often associated with sinus problems.  Sinus problems are often associated with allergy related changes.

Treatment:

Depending on what is the cause of the sinus problem, a majority of patients respond well to conservative Chiropractic treatments.  If you or someone you know is needlessly suffering from head pain due to sinus problems please call Dr. Gerwig today and find out if Chiropractic treatments is a viable option for you.

Vertigo:

Background:

Vertigo is defined as the feeling of dizziness.  Vertigo is caused by a number of conditions that affect the communication between the brain and the environment around you.  A little background is necessary to understand vertigo and that starts with the fact that your brain uses 3 inputs to determine balance.  First is the eyes, second is the vestibular system (inner ear) and the third is called proprioception (your joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles communicating with your brain).  An alteration or a difference in any of this information being brought to the brain can create that sensation of dizziness and produce vertigo.

Signs and Symptoms:

Vertigo is described either as a feeling that the world is spinning around you or that you are spinning while the world is standing still.  The symptoms of vertigo can last a matter of seconds or, in more severe cases, for hours to days.  Depending on the cause of the vertigo the trigger can be anywhere from movement of the head to certain smells and foods.

Treatment:

Chiropractic treatment has been found to be very effective in treating certain cases of vertigo and can eliminate or reduce the frequency and intensity of the episodes you experience.  Here at Absolute Healthcare Chiropractic we strive to find the exact cause of your vertigo and from that we can determine a treatment protocol that will relieve or completely resolve your issues.  If you or someone you know is needlessly suffering from Vertigo, come into Absolute Healthcare today and have Dr. Gerwig design a customized treatment protocol that will have you on the road to living Vertigo free today.

Tinnitus:

Background:

Tinnitus is the sensation of ringing in the ears on either an occasional or permanent basis.  Tinnitus can be created by a number of different situations from a miscommunication between your ears and your brain, a substance in the vestibular system, overuse of the inner ear (excessive loud music/noise), pinched nerve in the neck and many others.

Signs and Symptoms:

Someone suffering from tinnitus will report experiencing the ringing sensation that can vary from a light ringing that doesn’t interfere with anything to a permanent loud ringing that interferes with your normal ability to hear things.  Often times Tinnitus sufferers will report no related symptoms, but when the tinnitus is caused by something else the can be associated symptoms.

Treatment:

At Absolute Healthcare Chiropractic we have treated many patients suffering from tinnitus and depending on the exact cause of the tinnitus have had favorable results.  If you or someone you know is needlessly suffering from tinnitus then have Dr. Gerwig find out what is causing the ringing in the ears and he can figure out the best course of treatment to reduce or eliminate the tinnitus.

TMJ Syndrome:

Background:

Temporal Mandibular Joint pain or dysfunction is commonly referred to TMJ Syndrome.  The pain and dysfunction have two primary causes; first is muscular abnormalities and the second is disc dysfunction.

Muscular abnormalities can create a situation where you are not opening your mouth evenly and as I look at someone Suffering from muscular TMJ syndrome I can see their Jaw deviate to one side on opening and closing.

Disc dysfunction in the TMJ joint can occur due to the unique nature of the joint.  The TMJ joint not only hinges open, but it also slides forward to allow for opening the mouth extra wide.  There is a disc that makes this hinge and slide occur without wear and tear on the joint surface.  If this disc becomes “stuck” then the normal motion of the joint cannot occur.  When I observe someone with a disc TMJ syndrome open their mouth I will usually see the jaw deviate to one side and then correct itself before the mouth is fully open.

Treatment:

Both situations respond tremendously to conservative Chiropractic care.  If you or someone you know is needlessly suffering with Jaw pain, call Absolute Healthcare Chiropractic and have Dr. Gerwig determine a treatment that can get you on the road being pain free.
